Rotolight has debuted the world’s first electronic softbox. The smart softbox is designed to save photographers time and give them more control over how to adjust the diffusion, focus, and spread of the lights they use.
The SmartSoft Box was announced during the successful campaign on Kickstarter, for the NEO 3 and AEOS 2. Both lights have become popular for backers and photographers, and the SmartSoft Box represents the first ever electronic softbox that can be controlled remotely and provide the same effects as hard consumable assets like gels and modifiers.
“The new SmartSoft Box has revolutionized how I can control light,” said Sam Nash, an award-winning commercial and fashion photographer who got a sneak peek of the technology. “It simply allows me to create pictures with just one modifier that has never been possible before. It’s a gamechanger.”
The Smartsoft technology is wrapped around lighting crystals, which are diffused in their natural state. But when you apply an electric current to them, they become transparent and brighter.
The Rotolight SmartSoft Box provides up to 1.5 stops of diffusion electronically and can move from soft output to a hard light source with a flick of a switch.
Field-tested in the company’s award-winning Titan Cinematic line, the Smartsoft has been tested on several films including the James Bond film No Time to Die and The Batman, as well as TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy.
The technology has been redesigned for Rotolight’s very popular new AEOS 2 lighting fixture.
The electronic Smartbox mounts to the lights within seconds and can be adjustable through the light’s touchscreen display or through their new Rotolight App.
The app, which is available on both iOS and Android platforms, provides complete control of lighting modes, color adjustment, power output, lighting effects, and more. The app also lets the lighting director customize groups and projects linking more than 20 Rotolight models simultaneously.
Pricing and availability
Rotolight SmartSoft Box is available for pre-order priced at $499 (£439). Shipping is expected by August 2022. The Aeos 2 will come with SmartSoft software preinstalled, and the Rotolight App will be available at the iOS & Google Play Stores on June 1st as a free download.
